WASHINGTON (CN) - It may be mild for a sex scandal these days, but Congressman Christopher Lee, a married, 2-term, conservative Republican from western New York, resigned Wednesday after a shirtless photo he sent to a woman he met on Craigslist was posted on the Internet.
Lee, who is 46, and has a child, responded to a Craigslist ad in the "women seeking men" section.
He told the woman he was a 39-year-old lobbyist, then sent her his photo. "I promise not to disappoint," he wrote.
The woman searched his name online, found out he was lying about his job and his age, then sent his emails to the Gawker website.
Lee resigned Wednesday in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo now must call a special election in the 26th District, a heavily Republican area from west of Rochester to northeast of Buffalo.
