Intelius Accused of Cheating Customers

SEATTLE (CN) - Intelius bills unwitting customers for monthly subscriptions for "nonexistent and/or unwanted services," and the bills go on forever, a class action claims in King County Court. The class claims that after buying Intelius products on the Internet, they were unknowingly, and perennially, charged for "services" from Adaptive Marketing, an Intelius affiliate.

Intelius and Adaptive have an "alliance" that has netted "millions of dollars in non-existent and/or unwanted services," the complaint states.

Intelius advertises itself as providing background checks and public records searches.

A "TechCrunch" article calls the extra fees a "total scam," according to the complaint.

"Intelius makes it difficult for the reasonable consumer to inquire about or cancel the Adaptive Program," the class claims, because the marketing agreement prohibits Intelius from communicating with Adaptive customers.

Adaptive is not named as a defendant.

The class claims the Washington Attorney General office and the Better Business Bureau have received hundreds of complaints about the scam.

The class seeks restitution and damages for violation of consumer laws. They are represented by Karin Swope and Mark Griffin with Keller Rohrback.
