Insurer Eyes Recovery of $1M for Illinois Spa Fire

JOLIET, Ill. (CN) - The makers of a massage oil that spontaneously combusted and caused a fire at a spa owes $1 million, an insurer claims in court.

Maryland Casualty Insurance Co. says it had to pay that amount pursuant to its policy with the Egyptian Revival Day Spa & Wellness Center in Carterville, Ill.

The complaint filed on Feb. 6 in Will County Circuit Court that the spa was using TheraPro Sweet Almond Oil in the way it was intended when "items that had been exposed to [it]" caught fire, causing "substantial damage" to the business.

A July 12, 2012, article from the Southern Illinoisan reports that the fire engulfed "an iconic" local structure. The newspaper reported that the fire ignited near or in the dryers.

Maryland Casualty wants reimbursement from Scrip Inc. and The Hygenic Corp., as the manufacturers of the oil.

The company is represented by Amy Dvorak with Grotefeld, Hoffmann, Schleiter, Gordon, Ochoa & Evinger in Chicago.
