BALTIMORE (CN) - Three retired defensive linemen claim the NFL pension plan relied on "hand-picked doctors" to deny them pensions for injuries they suffered during their careers. Pio Sagapolutele, Sean Smith, and Bruce Swager claim the NFL also demands "evidence that is unavailable or not required by law ... despite overwhelming evidence that they were totally and permanently disabled from an early date following their retirements."
The players sued The Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle NFL Player Retirement Plan, and The NFL Player Supplemental Disability Plan in Federal Court. They are represented by Cyril Smith.
