PHOENIX (CN) - Civil rights groups from across the nation sued an Arizona county attorney to try to stop enforcement of the state's new immigration law until a court rules on its constitutionality. The 59-page request for preliminary injunction and memorandum of law names Apache County Attorney Michael Whiting as the lead defendant.
Plaintiffs, led by Friendly House, are backed up by the ACLU, Maldef, the National Immigration Law Center, the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and the NAACP.
The groups asked a federal judge to rule on their request for preliminary injunction before Arizona Senate Bill 1070 takes effect as scheduled, on July 20.
