Inglewood Sued Over|Fatal Police Shooting

LOS ANGELES (CN) - The daughter of a black man who was shot to death Inglewood police this year has sued the city, claiming their use of deadly force was unjustified.

Responding to an early morning call on Sunday, Feb. 21, officers saw a man and a woman, who was armed, in a vehicle parked at Manchester Boulevard and Inglewood Avenue, according to news reports.

The man and woman in the Chevy Malibu were later identified as Marquintan Sandlin, 32, and Kisha Michael, 31.

Inglewood Mayor James Butts told NBC Los Angeles that after the officers found the couple unconscious, they backed away.

"The officers retreated, isolated the vehicle, and spent about 45 minutes attempting to rouse the occupants, and to de-escalate the situation," Butts told NBC on Feb. 23.

But Sandlin's minor daughter, T.R.S., says in her June 30 federal complaint that her father posed no threat and did nothing to justify the shooting.

"Without warning," the she says, the officers "repeatedly and unjustifiably" shot her father to death.

Michael was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Her family filed a similar lawsuit in March. One of Sandlin's two daughters was also a party to that lawsuit.

Kisha's twin sister Trisha Michael told the Times in February that her sister was "gunned down" and the circumstances surrounding her death were "still a mystery."

"She never owned a gun. I feel like they are not telling us the whole story," Trisha Michael said.

T.R.S. seeks punitive damages for use of deadly force and other civil rights violations.

She is represented by Andrew Ellis of El Segundo.

Neither the Inglewood Police Department nor Ellis immediately responded to requests for comment.
