Infant Pillows

WASHINGTON (CN) - After much angst by the lactating public and its supporters, the Boston Billow Nursing Pillow may be excepted from being banned as hazardous by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The general public was not allowed to buy the pillow because of the commission's 1991 rules banning pillows for use by infants, which were related to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

The Billow Pillow is used by mothers who have had C-sections, so they can breastfeed right after birth, and for mothers of children who have been in intensive care, who essentially would need four hands to nurse them properly, without the pillow.

The commission is accepting comments on the proposed exception, and the associated dropping of a Sept. 27, 2006 proposal to address "any unreasonable risk of injury or death which may be associated with the proliferation of infant cushions/pillows and pillow-like products intended for infants in the marketplace," because there seems not to be much data on such a proliferation.
