Indiana Cracks Down on Abortion

INDIANAPOLIS (CN) - Indiana legislators proposed a law that would require doctors to tell women who seek an abortion that life begins at conception, that fetuses can feel pain, that would make abortion illegal after 20 weeks unless to save the mother's life, and would force women to look at an ultrasound image of their fetus unless they state in writing that they do not want to.

House Bill 1210 "States public policy findings concerning a fetus feeling pain and a compelling state interest in protecting the fetus," according to the Synopsis in the General Assembly bill. It also provides for punitive damages against doctors who violate its provisions, and sets aside a continuous appropriation for the state to defend the constitutionality of the law.
