Immigration

WASHINGTON (CN) - Doctors, lawyers and other professionals who are citizens of Canada or Mexico working in the United States will receive a new immigration classification which will allow them to enter and leave the U.S. at will for up to three years, according to a U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Service regulation.

The Trade NAFTA Nonimmigrant status is part of the North American Free Trade Agreement and is meant to make entry of qualified workers in critical professions easier. The spouses and children of TN nonimmigrants also will be allowed multiple entry privileges but may not accept employment in the United States under this classification.

Three year extensions of the status may be made indefinitely if the alien otherwise qualifies.
