SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CN) - The Illinois House struck down a bill that would have toughened standards at state abortion clinics. The bill requiring abortion clinics to meet the same standards as hospitals received 57 of the needed 60 votes. Fifty-one lawmakers voted no.
Supporters claim the measure was meant to ensure safety in abortion clinics. Opponents said the purpose was to burden clinics with unnecessary regulations, noting that it didn't apply to other clinics, such as those that offer liposuction or Lasik eye surgery.
The bill could be brought back for another vote.
