Illinois Settles|With Pregnant Inmates

CHICAGO (CN) - Illinois will pay $4.1 million to 80 inmates to settle federal claims that they were shackled while giving birth in the Cook County Jail.

A federal judge gave preliminary approval to the class action settlement, The Associated Press reported. Each plaintiff will receive about $35,000.

The settlement also provides for establishment of a fund to provide job, educational and family counseling for the plaintiffs.

In 1999, Illinois banned the practice of shackling inmates who were giving birth.
