(CN) - Illinois Supreme Court justices on Wednesday denied Attorney General Lisa Madigan's effort to remove Gov. Rod Blagojevich from office in the wake of his highly publicized corruption scandal.
The court, without comment, rejected Madigan's motion for a temporary restraining order that would strip Blagojevich of his gubernatorial powers and remove him from office.
Blagojevich was arrested Dec. 9 on federal corruption charges, including an allegation that he tried to sell President-elect Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat to the highest bidder.
Madigan said the two-term Democrat is "unable to serve as governor due to disability and should not rightfully continue to hold that office."
Blagojevich has enlisted the help of high-powered attorneys to defend the charges.
