A whale is hauled on a fishing boat after it was killed in the Atlantic Ocean, off the west coast of Iceland, on Aug. 23, 2003. The Icelandic government has given permission for 38 whales to be caught for scientific reasons within the next two months. The government says the cull is needed to study the stomach contents of the mammals to measure their effect on fish stocks such as cod, which are vital to the national economy. Animal welfare groups fear the hunt is intended to gauge international reaction before the resumption of commercial whaling. The United States and other nations opposed to whaling have said there is no scientific basis for the research. (AP Photo/Adam Butler)
