NEWARK (CN) - Two men say the Journal News defamed them in a report that one had killed the other in a hunting accident, and was facing a felony charge for it. James Morrone and Steven Triano say Triano was shot in the knee while hunting, but did not die.
The separate federal complaints demand damages from the Journal News and its online outlet, Lohud.com.
The complaints cite the Nov. 23, 2007 headline, "Purchase Man Charged with Felony in Hunting Death."
Both complaints, one from each hunter, point out that Triano did not die.
Morrone lives in Purchase, N.Y.
Both complaints state that Triano was accidentally shot in the leg while the friends tracked a deer that had been shot by another hunter.
Neither complaint concedes that Morrone shot Triano. Both state only that Triano was shot in the knee accidentally.
Both men are represented by Martin Asatrian.
