Humes Could Be Calif.’s First Gay Appeals Judge

(CN) - The California Court of Appeal could see its first openly gay associate justice if a commission approves Gov. Edmund Brown's appointment of Jim Humes.

Humes, 53, a Democrat from San Francisco, will replace the now-retired Justice Patricia Sepulveda on division four of the First District Court of Appeal.

Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, Attorney General Kamala Harris and Senior Presiding Justice J. Anthony Kline comprise the Commission on Judicial Appointments that needs to confirm the appointment.

Humes earned his bachelor's degree from Illinois State University, a master's degree in social science from the University of Colorado and a juris doctorate from the University of Denver.

His legal career began at Jay Stuart Radetsky PC in 1983, and Humes next worked for the Colorado Attorney General's Office from 1984 to 1986.

Humes returned to the Colorado Attorney General's Office in 1987 after spending a year as an associate with Banta Hoyt Banta Greene Hannen and Everall PC.

The California Department of Justice employed Humes in various capacities from 1993 to 2007. His titles included chief assistant of the civil division and senior assistant attorney general of the health, education and welfare section.

Humes served as a chief deputy attorney general to then Attorney General Brown from 2007 to 2011, and has been the governor's executive secretary for legal affairs, administration and policy since 2011.

He will earn an annual salary of $204,599.
