Huge Brooklyn Project Moves One Step Closer

(CN) - The New York State Court of Appeals upheld a developer's right to seize private property to make way for the $4.9 billion, 22-acre Atlantic Yards Development. The decision removes the last legal hurdle for New York's largest single-source development project in history.

The development, which will include an arena, offices spaces and condos, has been the focus of four active lawsuits, most of them filed by residents in the neighborhood.

"Once again the courts have made it clear that this project represents a significant public benefit for the people of Brooklyn and the entire City," said Bruce Ratner, the project's developer.

Construction is expected to begin soon on the 20,000-seat Barclay's Center, the new proposed home for the Nets basketball franchise, as well as 16 residential and commercial skyscrapers.

Appellants say the fight against the project isn't over and vowed to press on in the courts.
