Houston Oncologist Who Poisoned Lover Gets 10 Years

HOUSTON (CN) - The Houston oncologist convicted of poisoning her lover was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

A Harris County jury handed down the sentence Monday for Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, a former MD Anderson Cancer Center doctor, found guilty of poisoning her lover and research partner, Dr. George Blumenschein, by putting ethylene glycol in his coffee.

The 43-year-old Gonzalez-Angulo's sentence came after the jury convicted her of aggravated assault on Friday.

Prosecutors asked the jury to sentence the Columbia-born doctor to 30 years in prison, given that Blumenschein suffered kidney damage from the substance, used to make antifreeze, which will likely shorten his life.

Her defense team lobbied for probation and focused on her award-winning work as a breast cancer doctor.

The conviction means she will probably lose her medical license.

She will be eligible for parole in 2019.
