Hospital Settles Environmental Case

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (CN) - Gateway Regional Medical Center will settle hazardous chemical reporting violations by paying $12,900 to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Gateway also must do an environmental upgrade that will cost $38,899, the EPA said.

The project will include purchase and donation of emergency response equipment to the Granite City Fire Department and the Madison County HAZMAT Team.

The EPA accused Gateway of failing to file reports with state and local authorities on the fuel it kept to power backup generators. Gateway's Granite City medical center is 10 miles northwest of St. Louis.
