Hospital CEO Gets|4 Months in Prison

MANHATTAN (CN) - The former CEO of Parkway Hospital in Queens was sentenced Tuesday to 4 months in federal prison for bribing former New York state Senator Carl Kruger.

Robert Aquino is the sixth person convicted of or to plead guilty to bribing Kruger. He pleaded guilty in January to conspiring to commit bribery, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in announcing his sentence.

"When Parkway Hospital was slated to be closed by New York State in the summer of

2008, Aquino caused Parkway Hospital to make $60,000 in payments to Adex Management Inc. ('Adex'), a company in which former New York State Senator Carl Kruger had an interest," prosecutors said in the statement. "Adex paid half of the $60,000 it received from Parkway Hospital to Olympian Strategic Development Corp., a consulting company controlled by Michael Turano, who had a close relationship with Kruger. Aquino understood that in exchange for making the payments to Adex, Senator Kruger would undertake official action in his capacity as a member of the New York State Senate to help keep Parkway Hospital open."

Kruger, 62, was sentenced to 7 years in prison; Turano, 50, both of Brooklyn, to 2 years.

Solomon Kalish, 61, the owner of Adex, pleaded guilty in January and will be sentenced on May 22.

David Rosen, 64, the former CEO of MediSys Health Network, was convicted in a bench trial and will be sentenced on May 7.

Richard Lipsky, 65, a lobbyist, pleaded guilty in January and will be sentenced on Sept. 12.

All this information came from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
