Herr’s Recalls Mislabeled ‘Gluten-Free’ Chips

NOTTINGHAM, Pa. (CN) - Herr Foods is recalling small bags of sour cream and onion potato chip because their packaging incorrectly includes a gluten-free label.

Though the ingredients list on the back of the 1.875-ounce bags note that they contain wheat, "the front panel of the package erroneously features the words 'Gluten Free,'" according to the company's voluntary-recall notice.

Herr's notes that the bags were distributed nationwide through retail stores, distributors and internet sales.

"No other bag sizes of Herr's sour cream 'n onion chips are involved with this recall," the recall notice states. "No other Herr's products are involved with this recall."

People with celiac disease cannot process the protein gluten, which naturally occurs in grains like wheat, rye and barley.

Herr's says it has not received any reported illnesses to date, but that gluten intake by people with Celiac can suffer gradual intestinal damage, preventing them from absorbing vitamins and minerals.

"Symptoms can include diarrhea, fatigue, headaches, abdominal pain, brain fog, rashes, nausea, vomiting, and other reactions," the recall notice states

Herr's notes that the mislabeled packages "are a green metallic color bag with a red Herr's logo at the top center of the package."

The chips are stamped with the product code 122, and UPC number 7260000061.

The code date runs from Jan. 2, 2016, to Jan. 30, 2016.

Consumers can return affected products to the retailer where they purchased them for a full refund.

"Herr Foods and other retailers are removing recalled product from the retailers' shelves," the company said.
