WASHINGTON (CN) - The Department of Veterans Affairs is adding systemic amyloidosis, a cancer-like disease, to its Schedule for Rating Disabilities for the hemic and lymphatic systems, according to new regulations.
The next step in fully implementing the Secretary of Veterans Affairs' decision to grant presumptive service connection based on herbicide exposure for this disease is to establish criteria for disability evaluation.
Systemic amyloidosis, also known as AL amyloidosis or primary amyloidosis, is a rare condition that can cause serious changes in nearly any organ of the body. Chemotherapy is used to treat it, but it often can cause serious damage before it is diagnosed.
Agent Orange or other herbicides were used to knock back jungle underbrush hiding the enemy during the Vietnam War.
