Hawaii Moves to Extend Block of Trump Travel Ban

The federal judge in Hawaii who last week temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban has scheduled a March 29 hearing to decide the Aloha State’s request to turn the block into a preliminary injunction.

HONOLULU (CN) – The federal judge in Hawaii who last week temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban has scheduled a March 29 hearing to decide the Aloha State’s request to turn the block into a preliminary injunction.

Arguing that the president’s order is “state-sanctioned discrimination” against Muslims and continues to harm plaintiffs, Hawaii state Attorney General Douglas Chin has asked U.S. District Judge Derek Watson to extend the stay while more “permanent solutions” are considered.

On Sunday, Watson rejected a Justice Department request for him to clarify his order, saying that there was nothing unclear about the 43-page ruling. He also said the government cannot ask for distinctions that it failed to make in its own briefs and oral arguments.

The government has until Friday to respond to Hawaii’s latest filing.

Meanwhile, the Justice Department has asked the Fourth Circuit – which is hearing Maryland’s fight against the revised travel ban – to expedite the feds’ request to stay a temporary block there.

And the case against Trump’s first executive order instituting the travel ban continues in the Western District of Washington.
