SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois Supreme Court ruled two Cook County taxes on firearm and ammunition purchases are unconstitutional under the uniformity clause. The court pointed out that the revenue generated from the taxes does not do anything to curb “the cost of gun violence” although the county justified the taxes to “fund the staggering economic” effects of gun violence.
