A gull accompanies the photographer on an April 2010 visit to the graveyard outside the Kirk of St. Nicholas in Aberdeen, Scotland. The photographer found a handful of gravesites bearing the family names of his Scottish ancestors, many of whom were christened in a church on the site, the first mention of which can be found in a papal document from 1151. The church in the center of the city on the eastern Scottish coast is also known as “The Mither Kirk,” or Mother Church. (Courthouse News photo / Chris Marshall)
