MANHATTAN (CN) - The director of a nonprofit foster care agency was convicted of defrauding New York City of more than $100,000 for needy children who do not exist. Stay Thompson aka Stay Daniels ran her game as head of Concord Family Services, federal prosecutors said.
Thompson swiped the money from New York City's Administration for Family Services. She was convicted of mail fraud and money laundering after an 8-day trial before U.S. District Judge Peter Leisure. The jury did not reach a verdict on conspiring to embezzle.
Thompson, 44, faces a statutory minimum sentence of 30 years in prison. Judge Leisure revoked her bail after the verdict.
Five other people have pleaded guilty in the long-running corruption scheme, in which they used phantom needy children to steal money intended for needy children who actually do exist.
