Guatemalan Unions

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Office of Trade and Labor Affairs has agreed to review allegations of the Guatemalan government's violation of worker rights filed in April by six Guatemalan trade unions and the AFL-CIO.

The groups requested dispute resolution, alleging violations of the free trade agreement between the United States, Central America and the Dominican Republic.

Specific allegations include that the Guatemalan government has failed to enforce its laws regarding acts of violence against trade unionists, including murders, regarding the right of association and the right to organize and bargain collectively, and regarding non-payment of severance and social security benefits.

During the review, the OTLA will attempt to substantiate allegations already supported by specific factual descriptions showing the violations. Once the office better understands the issues, it will publicly report on them.
