GSA Party Man Charged With False Claims

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - A former General Services Administration official who came under fire in 2012 for organizing a lavish government convention in Las Vegas was federally charged Thursday with seeking reimbursement for personal travel expenses and then lying about it.

The United States charged 59-year-old Jeffrey Neely with three counts of false claims and two counts of making false statements and using false documents.

Neely was formerly the regional commissioner and acting regional administrator for GSA's Public Buildings Service, Pacific Rim Region. Prosecutors say he improperly used taxpayer money for travel and expenses around the Pacific, including Guam, Saipan, Long Beach and Las Vegas.

In 2012 Neely was scrutinized for his role in organizing a 2010 Las Vegas convention that included magic acts, a hot tub and federal workers sipping martinis on a red carpet.

If convicted of all charges, Neely faces up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each violation.
