Groups Sue To Protect Beluga Whale

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Secretary of Commerce and National Marine Fisheries Service illegally refuse to list the Cook Inlet beluga whale as an endangered species, six environmental groups claim in Federal Court.

Despite reduction of the beluga whale population to fewer than 400, the defendants claim the mammal does not need protection, the groups say. Their lead attorney is William Snape III with the Center for Biological Diversity, of Tucson.
