Groped for Welfare Help, Mother Says

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (CN) - A welfare supervisor sexually groped a client repeatedly under threat of terminating her rent assistance, the woman claims in Madison County Court. The mother says she received rent assistance from November 2006 to November 2009 from Saline Township and its Supervisor Alvin Steiner.

She claims Steiner repeatedly grabbed her breasts and buttocks, tried to kiss her and once removed his pants when she came to Saline's office to get her assistance. She says Steiner told her he would have her benefits terminated if she reported him.

She claims the assaults continued until Steiner resigned on Nov. 15, 2009.

She seeks punitive damages from Saline Township and Steiner, and is represented by Thomas Maag.
