Grizzly Bear Killer Sentenced in Iowa

(CN) - An Iowa man was sentenced to three years probation and a fine for illegally killing a grizzly bear in Alaska and transporting it to his home state, prosecutors said.

Brenton Clark, 35, killed a grizzly bear in Alaska without a proper license and displayed the bear in his Jefferson County, Iowa, hunting lodge in 2010, according to Southern Iowa U.S. Attorney Kevin VanderSchel. Clark was also accused of not tagging and sealing the bear as required by Alaska law.

The Fairfield resident was sentenced Monday to three years of probation and a $2,000 fine for the unlawful transport and receipt of a bear, according to VanderSchel. He had already pleaded guilty on June 16 of this year.

Clark allegedly admitted to encouraging potential witnesses to not disclose information to law enforcement.

His actions violated the Lacey Act, VanderSchel said. Clark's probation conditions reportedly include a restriction on firearms and hunting, 120 days of home confinement and 80 hours of community service.
