Grieving Mom Says Cops Misidentified Son

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (CN) - The East St. Louis Police Department misidentified a homicide victim, causing him to be buried under a different name, his mother claims in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Kathleen Beecher-Miller said her son, Kenny Steinback, was killed on Feb. 15, 2008. But East St. Louis Police thought Steinback was another man and by the time they realized the mistake, Steinback had been buried by another family under another name, the suit states.

Beecher-Miller claims the department did not follow proper police procedures, and she suffered emotional distress caused by the exhumation and reburial of her son. She demands more than $50,000 in damages and is represented by Gary Mack. Det. Michael Floore also was named as a defendant.
