WASHINGTON (CN) - To reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil by increasing domestic sources of energy and reduce greenhouse gases, the Environmental Protection Agency plans to ensure that refiners, blenders, and importers of gasoline and diesel use fuel that meets the required lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions performance standards, when meeting the volume requirements of the Energy Independence and Security Act.
For the first time in a regulatory program, an assessment of greenhouse gas emission performance is being used to establish those fuels that qualify for the four different renewable fuel standards set forth in the act. The greenhouse gas emission assessments in the amended statutes must evaluate the full lifecycle emission impacts of fuel production including both direct and indirect emissions, including significant emissions from land use changes.
The proposed changes would apply starting January.
