Green Tea Recall Amid Spectre of Salmonella

(CN) — The Republic of Tea issued a "cautious" voluntary recall of its organic turmeric ginger green tea, saying that some of its organic ginger may have been contaminated by salmonella.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shared the company's announcement on the agency's website Friday.

The teamaker says no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, and samples of organic ginger that were tested by a third-party lab showed no salmonella.

The Republic of Tea says the recall is a precautionary measure.

"There is absolutely no evidence that our tea has been contaminated. We are taking this preventive, cautious measure because we want our citizens to feel comfortable when drinking our premium quality teas and herbs," Todd Rubin, minister of evolution at the Republic of Tea, said in a statement. "The health and safety of our citizens is our number one priority and we will not take potential health risks lightly. This voluntary recall is the first in our nearly quarter-century history."

The recalled organic turmeric ginger green tea products have UPC codes of 7-42676-40355-5, 7-42676-30655-9, 7-42676-30655-9 and 7-42676-42155-9, with "best sipped by" dates of March 23, 2018, and April 13, 2018.

Customers who bought the recalled tea can return it for a replacement or a full refund.

Salmonella illnesses usually last up to a week and symptoms include diarrhea, fever and cramps, which take up to 72 hours to develop.

Children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk.

About 400 people die each year in the United States from salmonella infection, according to the FDA.
