Grandma Sentenced|for Assaulting Reporter

(CN) - A retired, 75-year-old attorney who is a grandmother was sentenced to probation for assaulting a New Mexico newspaper reporter in a federal courthouse.

Marjorie Reese Stewart, 75, of Kingston, N.M. was sentenced to one year of probation, fined $250 and ordered to perform 10 hours of community service, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Albuquerque said in a statement.

She was convicted on Jan. 4 of misdemeanor assault after a bench trial before a federal magistrate.

Stewart assaulted a Las Cruces Sun-News reporter at Las Cruces Federal Courthouse on Sept. 19, 2010.

Stewart and the reporter both attended a court proceeding that day where a federal judge overruled an order allowing Remington Reese to be released to the custody of Reese Stewart, his grandmother.

"After the proceeding, while the reporter was standing outside the courtroom, Reese Stewart elbowed the reporter 'hard' in the stomach as Reese Stewart walked out of the courtroom," prosecutors said in the statement. "Shortly thereafter, as the reporter approached a female acquaintance with the intention of greeting her, Reese Stewart extended her right arm and hand and grabbed the reporter by the neck and left shoulder. Reese Stewart then shoved the reporter away from the female without saying a word to the reporter"

A security camera outside the courtroom recorded Reese Stewart grabbing the reporter and shoving her away, prosecutors said.
