PORTLAND, Ore. (CN) - A grand juror who leaked information about criminal indictments, forcing drug raids to be canceled for officers' safety, was sentenced Wednesday to a year of probation.
Lori Ann Cubit, 56, of Gresham, also will have to do 100 hours of community service. She was convicted of criminal contempt of court, a misdemeanor.
Cubit sat on a federal grand jury that heard evidence on Dec. 30, 2013 about a violent gang that was dealing drugs and committing other crimes in and around Portland, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement Wednesday.
On Dec. 31, prosecutors learned that evidence from the hearing - including identities of the suspects, the charges they would face, and the use of wiretaps against them - had been disclosed and were circulating on the street. The indictments were under seal.
"Due to the leak of information, a series of planned search warrants and arrests had to be canceled due to concerns over officer safety. One defendant fled the jurisdiction," the U.S. attorney said in the statement.
Cubit had told her family about the grand jury proceedings, and from there the information spread to the street. She pleaded guilty in April this year to criminal contempt of court. She apologized Wednesday during her sentencing hearing.
