Government Drops Case|Against Ted Stevens

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Justice Department dismissed with prejudice the indictment of former Alaskan Sen. Ted Stevens and will not proceed with a new trial, Attorney General Eric Holder said. Holder said a review of the case found that certain information was not provided to the defense to use in the trial, and that the Justice Department's Office of Responsibility will conduct a thorough review of the prosecution.

The information not given to the defense includes witness interview notes that could have been used in cross examination.

Stevens, who maintained his innocence against the bribery and corruption charges, lost his bid for re-election in the wake of the scandal.
