(CN) - The U.S. Senate confirmed, via voice vote, the judicial appointment to the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada of Las Vegas attorney Andrew Gordon.
President Barack Obama nominated the 50-year-old Gordon on Sept. 19, 2012, and the Senate Judiciary Committee reported him favorably on Feb. 14, 2013.
Gordon takes the place of U.S. District Judge Kent Dawson who took senior status on July 9, 2012.
The San Francisco native is an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, and he also serves as a private arbitrator and mediator. He received his bachelor's degree, cum laude, from Claremont McKenna College in 1984 and his juris doctorate from Harvard Law School in 1987.
From there, Gordon worked at the law firm of Streich Lang Weeks & Cardon in Phoenix, Ariz., from 1987 to 1992, and with the law firm of Dawson & Associates in Las Vegas from 1992 to 1994. He joined the law firm of McDonald Carano Wilson in Las Vegas as an associate and has been a partner there since 1997.
Gordon also served as a lawyer representative to the 9th Circuit Judicial Conference from 2001 to 2007 and as chair of the 9th Circuit's Lawyer Representatives Coordinating Committee from 2006 to 2007.
The U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada, which is authorized seven judgeships, has 3,419 new case filings in 2012. The court currently has two vacancies.
Gordon will earn a salary of $174,000.
