Golden Trout Gets No|Help From Uncle Sam

WASHINGTON (CN) - The California golden trout does not merit threatened or endangered listing under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said.

In a 12-month species review, Fish & Wildlife said that due to the "reduction in threats resulting from conservation actions conducted in accordance with a multi-agency conservation strategy," the species is not threatened, as it was when Trout Unlimited petitioned the agency to list it in 2000.

Trout Unlimited called the decision both "troubling" and a "tribute to the success of collaborative efforts to save California's state fish from extinction."

Trout Unlimited said in a statement that long-term threats to the species, including habitat loss, have not been permanently addressed.
