BROOKLYN (CN) - A Chinese concert promoter paid $2 million to get the Backstreet Boys to perform at several concerts, but the company it hired never told the band and pocketed most of the deposit, a federal lawsuit claims.
Guangzhou Love Live Culture Development Ltd. sued Belinda International Ltd., Belinda International Entertainment Group and Kam Yan Leung in Brooklyn on Friday.
The plaintiff says it paid the Queens-based Belinda $2.2 million amid promises that it could get the '90s boy band at 10 different performances throughout China, Macau and Hong Kong this past March.
The defendants took the money, but "never obtained a commitment from [the band] nor confirmed the participation of the Backstreet Boys as promised, and were at all times aware that they were never ready, able or in any position to commit and assure the services of the Backstreet Boys for the scheduled concert performance as promised," according to the 12-page complaint.
Neither the Backstreet Boys nor any of its members is a party to the complaint.
The defendants then dragged their feet in returning only $640,000 of the deposit and kept the remaining $1.5 million, plaintiff says.
The plaintiff wants its money back, and is represented by Kerry Kaltenbach in Manhattan.
