JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - GlaxoSmithKline will pay $600 million to settle claims that it sold adulterated drugs. The Missouri Medicaid program will get $9 million of it, through the federal government, with $3.5 million going to the state itself.
SB Pharmaco, a GlaxoSmithKline subsidiary in Puerto Rico that made the bad drugs, will pay $150 million in criminal fines and forfeitures, Attorney General Chris Koster announced.
The settlement came out of a 2004 complaint in Massachusetts that claimed GlaxoSmithKline knowingly made, distributed and sold products that fell below Federal Drug Administration standards. The products included Paxil CR, Vandamet, Kytril and Bactroban.
