Girl’s Punishment Too Harsh, Mom Says

LOUISVILLE, KY. (CN) - The mother of a 14-year-old girl who was arrested for suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder claims the school district unconstitutionally transferred the girl to an alternative middle school. The mom claims that since the girl has not been to trial yet, the justification for the transfer must have come, illegally, from the juvenile court record.

The mom says it's not fair because the alleged conspiracy did not take place on school grounds. She wants her daughter placed in a less restrictive middle school and, when she gets there, in a less restrictive high school than the Jefferson County Public Schools propose. She also wants punitive damages.

The mom and girl are represented by Rita Ward with the Legal Aid Society.
