German Man Branded as Terrorist by U.S.A.

(CN) -Turkish-born German national Emrah Erdogan has been designated an international terrorist in an attempt to clip his wings, the State Department said Wednesday.

Erdogan was also placed on the United Nations' al-Qaida Sanctions List.

Those designations mean he won't be able to travel, get bank accounts or do business around the world, according to the U.S. State Department.

The 27-year-old is accused of recruiting terrorists, fighting and raising funds for al-Qaida and al-Shabaab, which is al-Qaeda's affiliate in Somalia.

Erdogan pulled off attacks in Kenya and Uganda before being arrested in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in 2012. He was then extradited to Germany.

He was sentenced in German courts to nearly seven years for joining military groups in Pakistan and Somalia, and for phoning in fake threats in Pakistan and Germany in 2010.

"The imposition of sanctions by the United States against terrorists is an important element of our counterterrorism efforts," the State Department said in a statement Wednesday. "Today's action notifies the U.S. public and the international community that Emrah Erdogan has been actively engaged in terrorism."
