Georgia Governor Vetoes Concealed Handgun Bill

(CN) - Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal on Tuesday evening vetoed a bill that would have allowed concealed handguns on college campuses.

The governor announced the veto in a statement at about 5 p.m. He said the biggest driver of his decision was the state Senate's failure to change the wording from the House bill.

The governor wanted to expand the number of areas on campus that guns would remain prohibited. When the language he sought wasn't added, Deal said he had no choice but to reject the proposal.

"From the early days of our nation and state, colleges have been treated as sanctuaries of learning where firearms have not been allowed. To depart from such time honored protections should require overwhelming justification," he said in his veto statement.
