Gender surgery in prison

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A federal court in North Carolina declined to grant summary judgement to either the state’s correctional department or the incarcerated trans woman who is suing it for denying her request for gender-affirming surgery. An evidentiary hearing is needed to determine whether the surgery is medically necessary for the woman, and to make sure the state office’s did not automatically reject her request.
