MANHATTAN (CN) - Two members of the Gambino crime family pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring to murder a man in 1998 in aid of racketeering. Letterio DeCarlo and Thomas Dono admitted conspiring to kill Frank Hydell on April 28, 1998, "to maintain and increase their standing as associates of the Gambino Organized Crime Family," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement announcing the guilty pleas.
Prosecutors said Hydell was murdered to prevent him from informing on the crimes of the Gambino organization, including the January 1997 beating and murder of Frank Parasole.
As members of the Gambino crime family, DeCarlo, 47, and Dono, 34, "committed various crimes, including murder, assault, robbery, burglary, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice," the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Both men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, which is punishable by up to 0 years in prison, and conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, punishable by up to 5 years in prison. They will be sentenced on March 22, 2010.
Co-defendant Edmund Boyle is scheduled for trial on related charges on Jan. 19.
