G. Gordon Liddy Records to Be Unsealed

WASHINGTON (CN) - A federal judge agreed to unseal records associated with the prosecution of Watergate conspirator G. Gordon Liddy.

U.S. Chief Judge Royce Lamberth agreed to release all documents relating to the Watergate case, except presentence reports and other personal documents implicating the privacy of a living person, documents reflecting the content of illegally obtained wiretaps and grand jury information.

Liddy served 8 years in federal prison for conspiring and breaking and entering the Democratic Campaign Committee headquarters during the 1972 presidential campaign. The scandal led to President Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974.

Judge Lamberth agreed to release all records regarding Liddy's prosecution not contested by the FBI, but ordered that the FBI present all records it wishes to remain sealed, with reasons why they should remain secret.

Lamberth ordered that the National Archives and Records Administration to review the released materials within 30 days.

The ruling comes in answer to a petition filed by Texas A&M University Professor Luke Nichter.
