Future Detentions

WASHINGTON (CN) - President Obama has ordered the creation of a Special Task Force on Detainee Disposition to develop legal options for detention of new suspects apprehended in armed conflicts and counterterrorism operations.

The task force is to conduct a comprehensive review of options available to the federal government regarding the apprehension, detention, trial, transfer, release, or other disposition of future detainees, and to identify which options are consistent with U.S. national security and foreign policy interests and the interests of justice.

The task force will be co-chaired by the Attorney General and the Secretary of Defense and will include the Secretary of State; the Secretary of Homeland Security; the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and the directors of the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Intelligence Agency. Obama has given the task force 180 days to report back on the possible legal options.
