FTC Wants Comments on|Kid Web Site’s Guidelines

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Federal Trade Commission requests comments on proposed self-regulatory guidelines submitted by i-SAFE, Inc. under the "safe harbor" provision of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule.

i-SAFE is a non-profit foundation for teaching safe Internet practices to young people, according to the company's Web site. The site includes mentoring and chat rooms.

Once guidelines are approved, if the FTC takes legal action against the company, the agency would take into account whether the company has followed its own guidelines.

The 1999 rule requires operators of Web sites for children under 13, or that collect information from children under 13, to post privacy policies, provide notice that the site will collect information from children, and obtain parental consent before collecting, using, or disclosing personal information from children.

The Federal Trade Commission requests public comment on the i-SAFE's proposed guidelines, regarding whether they provide the protection required by the rule, whether mechanisms for assessment of compliance are effective, whether incentives for operators' compliance are effective; and whether the guidelines provide adequate means for resolving consumer complaints.
