WASHINGTON (CN) - Handicapped & Disabled Workshops and the men who ran it bilked elderly people of $13.4 million by falsely claiming their purchases of overpriced household goods would benefit the handicapped, the FTC said in settled complaints.
The defendants harassed people into buying overpriced products such as light bulbs and garbage bags, charged their credit and debit cards without authorization, and called people who were on the FTC's National Do Not Call Registry or had already told the defendants they did not want to be called again, the FTC said.
The scam was run by Bruce D. Peeples, George Thomas and Joshua D. Abramson, according to the FTC complaints. They also ran the game under the names of Handi-Hope Industries and Handi-Ship, the FTC said.
