FTC Launches Kid Website

Washington D.C. (CN) - Watch out Disney! The Federal Trade Commission launched a new website for kids Thursday to help kids make better choices in a marketplace where they spend billions.

"We have seen a big increase in the amount of advertising that targets kids" says Consumer Education Specialist Jennifer Leach.

The website is set in a virtual mall where visitors can gauge the price of candy based on supply and demand and select from three competing pizza shops. They can also go into a theatre to watch a thriller on anti-trust laws.

Even adults might learn something new.

The FTC, whose primary role is to protect consumers, is working with the National Middle School association in the hopes teachers and parents will use the site to explain the marketplace to kids.

By July, the commission plans to expand the website to cover identity theft and smart shopping. The site can be found at www.ftc.gov/YouAreHere/.
